So another week has passed. I think Dusty is looking better. It has been so cold - today was the first day in over a week that we have gotten up to 32 degrees - so I haven't really done anything with him yet. Also, when he got here he had 4 shoes on. Last weekend he lost one. I keep all of my horses in a natural barefoot trim so I can't wait to get the rest of the shoes off. Ben Clayson, my trimmer comes on 1/22/13 and we will get that done then but until then I don't really want to do any lounging because his one barefoot hoof is getting chewed up from the frozen ground as it is not trimmed correctly currently. I will try to get pictures of his feet this week so that I can document their progress also. :)
Here is this weeks picture.
Stardust Dancer: the rehab of a rescue horse

Stardust Dancer was racehorse - Not a very good racehorse but he was a racehorse. He only raced in 6 races and the best he did was 2nd place. At one point he was claimed for $30,000. After that when he wasn't winning he was dumped at a livestock auction where he was purchased/rescued for $100 by Horse Plus Humane Society. They made a video of his history to that point - it is a bit sappy and idealistic but it does show a couple of his races and makes the point that once he wasn't useful he was sent to an uncertain fate at a livestock action. You can see the video here.
Horse Plus had him for a year and nobody showed any interest in him, partly because he has had some issues with his feet (abscesses) and partly because he was not big and flashy. I had to have my last rescue mare put down due to a tumor in her abdomen and now my mule, Onyx, was lonely. I contacted Horse Plus about another OTTB (Off the Track Thoroughbred) but that horse was already adopted, they told me about Stardust Dancer. I filled out the adoption application, they checked my references and within 3 weeks Stardust Dancer was at his new forever home. :)
When he got here he was a bit thin because he went off his feed with his last bout with hoof abscesses. This blog is going to be about his physical rehab and retraining.
Here he is the day he arrived.
